Keep safe during winter

Load shedding can contribute to unwanted fires because people forget to turn off their heaters when load shedded.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Winter has arrived and with it, the risk of fires. During the season, people often lose their valuables and loved ones when fires break out.

Turffontein firefighter, Solomon Moses, is advising people to always supervise their fires and any mechanisms used to generate heat and light, such as heaters and candles. He also encouraged people not to forget to disconnect their heaters during load shedding as they might not be around when the power comes back on.

Solomon said: “Electricity wiring must be done properly. Little fault can cause fires so rather get an expert to do the wiring for you. People must cover their pots when cooking, especially when there are sockets and light bulbs nearby or above the stove.

“For people living in the informal settlements, all fires must be supervised. Adding chemical substances to make fires stronger is discouraged because that can harm children in more ways than one.

“If you do not have a heater you should know that using a two plate stove to keep warm is very dangerous. Just as electricity blankets can be dangerous when there is water near them.

The Southern COURIER has received information about numerous fires already and would like to remind people to stay safe and informed.

For ambulance, fire and JMPD assistance, residents are advised to keep these numbers close by: 011 375 5911 and 10177.
