Fines to be issued to residents contravening bylaws
The Metro Police will be paying close attention the misuse of public pavements and walkways.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – The use of pavements to store rubble, or building material, is a contravention of the city’s bylaws and the metro police will be paying close attention to this problem.
Where residents have not obtained a hoarding permit, from the Building Control Department, a fine will be issued for building material dumped on their pavements – Chapter 2. Clause 19 of the Public Roads and Miscellaneous Bylaws states.
Ward 56 Clr Dennis Jane said: “No person may deposit or cause a deposit of any sand, stone, earth, bricks, timber, lime, cement or other building or excavated material of whatever nature on any portion of any public road, sidewalk or foot way unless it is deposited within an enclosure, in respect of which the prior written permission of the council has been obtained.
“In order to obtain a Hoarding Permit, application must be made on the relevant form, part of which requires the applicant to indicate, on a sketch with dimensions, the area of the pavement to be used or in use. The cost is R14 per square metre, per week, with increases likely to take place on Wednesday, July 1.”
