SAPS officers receive prestige awards

The awards are part of an expansive partnership between Edcon and the SAPS, wherein the retail giant supports a number of provincial and national initiatives in conjunction with the SAPS.

EDCON, South Africa’s largest non-food retailer, and the South African Police Service (SAPS) hosted the fourth Johannesburg Central Cluster Prestige Awards for 2015 on Friday, July 24.

The awards are part of an expansive partnership between Edcon and the SAPS, wherein the retail giant supports a number of provincial and national initiatives in conjunction with the SAPS.

SAPS’ Johannesburg Cluster is made up of eight police stations in and around Johannesburg. These are: Johannesburg Central, Booysens, Moffatview, Mondeor, Brixton, Sophiatown, Langlaagte and Fairlands.

The SAPS Johannesburg Central Cluster Awards were first hosted in 2012 as a platform to recognise and reward excellence in the SAPS.

Elelwane Pahlana, executive for transformation at Edcon, said the retailer viewed the awards as its contribution towards recognising members of the SAPS who have carried out their duties with the utmost professionalism and integrity.

“We hope that those who have been nominated and the winners will be encouraged to do more to uphold the prestige and honour of the SAPS and that their colleagues will also share in their glory. Policing is by its very nature a collective effort.”

Pahlana also encouraged members of civil society, including the Community Policing Forums, to continue with the work that they do, as the safety and security of our country is crucial in upholding our democracy.

“I would like to congratulate our winners and nominees, and all the policemen and women who honour their oath and uniform by doing their best to keep our communities safe” said Pahlana.

Some of the winners from the South who won awards:

* Warrant Officer JJ Yende (Booysens Police Station) won the Operational Employee of the Year for Detective Work.

*Senior Personnel Officer MA Potgieter (Mondeor Police Station) won the Support Employee of the Year.

* Sac Zandberg (Mondeor Police Station) received the Disabled Employee of the Year (second place).

The highlight of the evening was the Best Station Award which was bestowed on Mondeor Police Station, under Station Commander Col JJ Bezuidenhout.

He said: “The job is not done yet and that receiving an award should only remind us that we, together with our community, should combine our efforts more intensively in the fight against crime. We should strive to make daily achievements awarding, and not wait to be awarded once a year.

“The station management and staff at SAPS Mondeor are thanked for their efforts but are reminded that the war against crime is not over. God Bless.”
