JOHANNESBURG –
Miscarriage of Justice
Babies miscarried under the age of 26 weeks are deemed medical waste and may not be released for burial according to South African law. For many mothers, the shock discovery that they cannot plan a funeral compounds the devastating feeling of loss, and deprives them of a critical step in the healing process. But these unborn babies may soon have a voice. Carte Blanche meets Sonja Smith, the driving force behind a forthcoming court application to challenge this law.

Antibiotics Resistance
It’s an arms race between mutating organisms and pharmaceutical companies – and we’re losing the battle fast. By 2050, superbugs will kill up to ten million people every year. These deadly organisms, often acquired while people are recovering in hospital ICUs, now survive the antibiotic cocktails long used in trying to destroy them. Could cell phone use in hospitals be worsening the spread? Carte Blanche investigates a phenomenon described as deadlier than the threat of terrorism.

Child Protection Register
A prominent Durban drama teacher was recently sentenced to three years imprisonment after being convicted of 230 counts relating to child pornography and sexual exploitation of children. But this is not his first brush with the law. Twelve years ago he was convicted of the indecent assault of a minor. However, this conviction went unnoticed and he was appointed to teaching positions at top schools. Why wasn’t his name added to the Child Protection Register? Carte Blanche investigates.

Public Game Private Profits
Our State nature reserves should be custodians of South African wildlife, conserving this natural heritage for all. So, why have millions of rands worth of taxpayer-owned game been donated to a group of businessmen and so-called emerging farmers by the North West provincial government, threatening the viability of remaining herds? This empowerment project could bring in billions of rands. Carte Blanche asks – who stands to benefit?
