Samwu takes to DWS measures like a duck to water
The aim of the measures is to save water across the country.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) released a statement welcoming the Minister of the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), Nomvula Mokonyane’s, decision to introduce control measures in an effort to save water.
“We note the serious state of affairs of decreasing levels of water in national dams ranging from just above 60 per cent and 70 per cent, and specifically the four provinces and disaster declared areas. Samwu makes a plea to the DWS Minister that disaster relief funds must be used for the specific intended purpose and not corrupt practice or to further enrich tender-entrepreneurs,” said national collective bargaining officer, Chumani Gqeke.
A call also went out to all communities to take an active role in ensuring that the need to save water for the survival of mankind and economic growth in the country is given the attention it requires.
“South Africans, led by the Ministry, must play a leading role and campaign to educate our communities on the preservation of water. South Africa’s source of water is from surface ground and it is often threatened by weather conditions and pollution,” Gqeke added.
Samwu urged DWS to work together with municipalities and the National Treasury to improve aging municipal infrastructure which contributes to water leaks.
