GDE facts in numbers

There are 1 639 primary schools and 1 141 secondary schools in Gauteng.

GAUTENG Department of Education (GDE) outlined its figures for this year as follows:

• A total number of 128 539 applications for Grade one were received of which 95 per cent or 122 685 applicants were placed.

• For Grade eight 94 963 applications were received and 89 731 or 94 per cent placed.

• The department is constructing 21 schools of which four will open in January.

• Furniture to the value of R59 million has been procured and will be delivered to all schools.

• Twelve schools have been converted to cater for learners with special needs.

• Learners in 1 636 schools across the province will in the next academic year receive a meal.

• Grade 11 classes will be converted into paperless classrooms.

• To date, there are 2 262 319 learners enrolled in Gauteng schools.

• This year 90 294 learners enrolled in ordinary schools were from other provinces. The highest number of learners were from Limpopo (19 963) followed by the Eastern Cape (14 110) and the Northern Cape (1 896).

• There are 1 639 primary schools and 1 141 secondary schools.

• Gauteng schools recorded a total of 79 343 state-paid, SGB-paid and privately paid educators in the sector for 2015.

• The total number of educators in public ordinary schools stands at 50 076 with a salary bill of R18 874 409 532,68.

• This year the department handled a total of 304 disciplinary cases of teachers and 448 cases of learner ill-discipline.

• The National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations commenced on October 26 and the last exam will be written on November 27.

• There are 150 000 enrolled candidates completing the NSC examinations this year.

• A total of 41 455 non-educator personnel including psychologists, social workers, therapists, nurses and support staff for after school activities in the form of school patrollers, homework and sport support supervisors are employed by the GDE.

• A total of 7 115 employees left the system, through retirements, resignations and dismissal.

• The Department has converted Grade 12 classrooms into smart classes in 377 schools and provided Grade 12 learners from these schools with tablets.

• More than 350 000 learners are benefiting from paperless classrooms or the E-Learning Solution Programme.
