No casualties in Glenesk fire

Fortunately no injuries were reported as the house was empty, the neighbours only rescued dogs.

THE home of Joel Jannie in Epsilon Place, Glenesk was gutted by a fire on Thursday, August 17, while he was away.

Joel shared the three-bedroom home with his wife and three children. His neighbour Charmaine du Toit said they smelled something like wires burning and went outside to investigate.

“When we went out to investigate we saw smoke coming from my neighbour’s main bedroom. Instinctively we connected the hosepipe, and broke the back door to try to quell the fire. Other neighbours joined in helping. We called 112, however, the connection kept on cutting out.

“While the other neighbours were helping I rushed to the Turffontein Fire Station because it is not far from here. I was told the fire engine broke down. I then came back, continued to help until one fire engine came and eventually the second one arrived,” she said. Charmaine also wants to thank Eben and Hannelie Prinsloo, Danie du Plessis, Karen Nass and Tyron van der Hefer for being the first ones to help.

Joel said his neighbour was very helpful and she informed him about the fire. “I don’t know what started the fire as we didn’t even plug in the heater the previous night, I don’t know what to say,” he said.

Fortunately no injuries were reported as the house was empty, the neighbours only rescued dogs. The neighbours also called for a fire hydrant to be erected in the street so that it will be easier to contain fires. Other neighbours from the flat adjacent to the house were seen throwing water from the top of their apartment to help extinguish the blaze.

Robert Mulaudzi, Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson, said a call was lodged with them at 10:48 and fire engines from Malvern and Lawley fire stations were sent to the scene. He also concurred with Charmaine that there was no fire engine at Turffontein due to major repairs.
