A TAXI travelling at high speed down Kliprivier Drive, Glenvista, sped through a red traffic light on the corner of Bellairs and Kliprivier drives, hitting one vehicle, a black Audi, which then hit a white Hyundai Elantra, before the taxi overturned.
The accident happened on Thursday, September 1, at about 16:50. Eighteen emergency vehicles rushed to the scene and the taxi driver and his 15 passengers were all rushed to various hospitals. The driver of the Audi is believed to have suffered minor injuries but his passenger was more seriously injured. Both were taken to Netcare Mulbarton Hospital.
According to JMPD spokesperson Edna Mamonyane, the taxi driver was at fault. “He was travelling at a high speed and when the traffic lights changed to red at the intersection of Bellairs and Kliprivier drives, he couldn’t stop and went through, hitting the Audi as the driver was turning right into Bellairs Drive, from a southerly direction, pushing the car to the side of the road. The taxi driver is seriously injured with head and leg injuries, the passengers suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious, and all have been taken to hospitals,” she said.
The driver of the white Hyundai spoke to the COURIER reporter on the scene of the accident. “I was just about to travel into the intersection, turning right from Bellairs Drive into Kliprivier Drive, when the taxi came speeding through, hitting the Audi side on. If I’d driven any further into the intersection I could have been dead now,” said a shaken Basil Todd.
“The taxi was going so fast he could never have stopped when the lights changed to red. They just don’t learn and now all his passengers, as well as the people in the Audi are injured, some seriously,” Todd added.
Kliprivier Drive has seen many horrific accidents with fatalities, at the intersections of Bellairs Drive, Jordi Avenue and True North Road, taking the toll of them. The speed limit on Kliprivier Drive was lowered from 100kmh to 80kmh a couple of years ago, after local residents complained and petitioned to Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).
