Little Bambi and partners hosted a walk for community solidarity in Turffontein
Community organisations in Joburg south join to promote recovery and protection.
Little Bambi Day Care Centre and the Shaine Griqua Advice and Development Centre, in partnership with Heavenly Haven Retreat and the Jozi South ECD Forum, hosted a Recovery Walk in Turffontein focused on community solidarity and awareness.
The walk provided a platform to share messages on recovery, GBVF prevention, human trafficking awareness, child safeguarding, and community solidarity, while also demonstrating cooperation between community organisations and their partners.
The collaboration reflects the importance of bringing together different areas of community work, including early childhood development, psychosocial support, recovery, advocacy and public awareness, towards the broader goal of creating communities where people can seek assistance without fear, children can grow in safety, survivors can access support and vulnerable individuals are protected from exploitation.
To sustain impact, the organisers recommend several key actions:
• Regular awareness campaigns. Run steady campaigns. Focus on GBVF and human trafficking. Include substance abuse and child protection. Cover recovery topics.
• Strengthened ECD safeguarding. Protect children in early development. Use proper referral paths. Teach caregivers to spot risks.
• Improved psychosocial support. Help survivors of violence and abuse. Support victims of trauma. Give them better access to care.
• Targeted trafficking education. Teach communities about trafficking. Warn them about online grooming. Explain unsafe recruitment and fake job offers.
• Stronger local partnerships. Connect ECD centres with the community. Partner with government departments and healthcare providers. Work with social workers and police.
• Survivor-centred support. Put survivors first. Protect their confidentiality and dignity. Keep them safe. Provide correct referrals.
• Continuous oversight. Track all initiatives. Monitor progress constantly. Evaluate the results.
The organisers noted that while a single walk cannot resolve the underlying causes of violence, trafficking or substance dependency, sustained collaboration and community action can help strengthen prevention, improve access to support and encourage people to speak out against abuse and exploitation.
