SOJO directorship positive about the organisation’s future
“Once again SOJO, KlipSA and iProp have focused on the planning for Joburg South. Booysens and Booysens Reserve have seen a massive pavement upgrade which was finished at the end of 2015. There has also been an upgrade of Rosherville Road in City Deep, although there are still a few problems with laying cables but the road is much improved,” Bennet said.
SOJO CEO Nicky Vakaloudis opened the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Wednesday, August 31, and welcomed everyone for attending before chairperson Richard Bennet, gave his report for the year. “A year ago I spoke about the difficult times SOJO had been experiencing but the good news is through the dedicated work of our management we’ve had a successful year.
“In the Ormonde area there have been some good investments and the Ormonde precinct has seen great improvement. A new development is about to begin in Theta, and Aeroton is also seeing good growth – this is all great news.
“Crown Mines Golf Club is going through a tough time and struggling to keep its head above water and we are hoping they’ll come through this. Moving onto the city district, we are hoping to get some activity going with small businesses and although some members have stopped paying their fees to SOJO, others are doing so.
“We are very excited about the Mall of the South and it has given a massive confidence boost to the South, as well as Phumelela that supports development in the Turffontein area.
“In the terms of work Nicky does, she’s had to constantly remind the city about problem areas which need urgent addressing but she and her team are to be commended on the sterling work they do,” added Bennet.
It was mentioned that SOJO has held some amazing events this year, which have not only been profitable for them but also for local charities.
The KUBiC clean-up will begin in October and Kliprivier Drive will be looked at, focusing on cleaning up the areas which border this main arterial road through to the South.
SOJO plans on building new relationships this year and will also be maintaining relationships they already have and are confident of change and new growth. Sponsors were thanked for the rebranding of SOJO’s image and thanks were given to all for attending.
Peter Soester (financial director) gave his financial report but said it wasn’t quite as rosy as Richard’s report. “There is less money coming in from memberships but the day was saved by R53 000 extra income other than members’ fees. Members must bear in mind we are a cash organisation and can only count our income once it is paid. We’ve managed to keep our creditors at bay and we’ll hopefully carry on doing so,” he said.
The AGM ended on a positive note and the directorship and management will remain the same for the next year, as will the auditors, Grace Hughes and Associates.
