ALAN SURMON: "If employees need jobs, then there needs to be understanding with the employers in order to maintain jobs. There is job scarcity all around. And people need to work."
After the COURIER received a tip-off about the ill-treatment of employees by employers in a factory in the South, our reporters took to the street to ask the community for their take on the issue of ill-treatment at work.
SIBONGISENI MAHLABA: “They must go to jail, especially if there is evidence of ill-treatment. Department of Labour must also intervene in such instances. The law must take its course.”XULU SINDI: “They should go to prison for breaking the law. No one must be exploited in the name of the profit. There must be a mutual respect between the employees and the employer.”PRECIOUS DUBE: “Everyone deserves a second chance, especially if they are doing good. Though I agree with the notion that they should be punished for their deeds.”JERRY DUBE: “If you break the law you must suffer the consequences. Our people suffer because they do not know their rights. Let’s educate ourselves in labour laws.”
