Fire breaks out inside recycle plant

The Johannesburg Fire Department responded to the blaze at the Mpact recycling plant on November 3.

DESTRUCTION struck when a fire broke out at a recycling plant in Tulisa Park on Friday.

The Johannesburg Fire Department responded to the blaze at the Mpact recycling plant in Tulisa Park on November 3.

Details surrounding the cause are being investigated by the plant with Mpact recycling managing director John Hunt stating that immediate contingency plans were put in place to ensure optimum running of the plant.

He said they were able to divert recyclables to other nearby recycling operators.

He assured recyclers that the plant expected minimal disruptions to the collection of recyclable materials.

The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported. The extent of the damage to the stock and property was still unknown.

Mpact had launched a full internal investigation into the matter alongside a separate investigation by local authorities including their insurance company.

According to the group communications manager, Nthabiseng Chapeshamano, operations at the plant were expected to resume on November 6.
