A tale of two visits… in ward 57

After the visit to Falcon School, De Freitas and Chame visited the residents of Moffat View Old Age Home.

MEMBER of Parliament for Johannesburg South, Manny de Freitas MP, and Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame visited Falcon School and Moffat View Old Age Home on March 9.

As part of their ongoing campaign to highlight the importance of education, they visited an independent school, Falcon School, in La Rochelle.

“Despite their limited budget and facilities, I am impressed with how many extramural activities are provided to learners at this school,” said de Freitas.

Falcon School offers extramural activities such as drama, dancing and singing.

Sports on offer include soccer and athletics, among others.De Freitas said that, in general, the Department of Education does not understand the importance of extramural activities and sport for child development and education.

AT THE FALCON SCHOOL: Innocent Mponda (Manager at Falcon School), Sihle Cenge (Principal of Falcon School), Clr Faeeza Chame (Councillor for ward 57) and Manny de Freitas MP (Member of Parliament for Johannesburg South).

“I’ve noticed how newly built schools have little or no sport spaces and facilities and this is a great concern,” said de Freitas.

Immediately after the visit to Falcon School, De Freitas and Chame visited the residents of Moffat View Old Age Home.

“We had the opportunity to talk with the residents about their concerns,” de Freitas said.

He explained how shocked he was to discover that a double amputee senior citizen had not been given a ground floor unit, despite there being units available recently.

Daphney Mba has to be carried to and from her first-floor unit.

“This is an example of how local city officials show little concern, compassion and understanding of our residents,” said de Freitas.

He said that he and Chame will be taking up the matter with the council.

COURIER contacted the manager at Moffat View Old Age Home, Flora Moleti, for comment and she said she is not allowed to talk to the media.

However, she couldn’t give the contact number of her office.

“As a staff member we are not allowed to speak to the media. We have our communication office in Braamfontein, they are the ones who can help. I don’t know their contact number,” she said.
