[GALLERY + VIDEOS]: Jackson Informal Settlement residents protest for electricity
The COURIER has done a couple of articles regarding the improvement of life to the people of Jackson Informal Settlement.
SCORES of residents from Jackson Informal Settlement in Eikenhof barricaded roads and burnt tyres in a protest for the installation of electricity on April 12.
The corner of R82 and R554 was a no-go area, especially for motorists, as angry residents stationed there was singing while the Mondeor SAPS and JMPD contained the situation.
Their main reason for the protest was the lack of electricity in the area.

One resident said, “Since 1995 we’ve been waiting for electricity. The ANC councillor, Ace Mokonyane, has done nothing for us. There’s no electricity, no toilets, no RDP houses and no development. That is why we are protesting. We want electricity and new stands.”
The COURIER has published a couple of articles regarding the improvement of life to the people of Jackson Informal Settlement. Neither the councillor nor the City of Johannesburg responded to the queries posed to them about this issue. With regard to Ace, the number given to the COURIER by one of the local leaders does not exist and the CoJ hasn’t responded to the previous query sent on March 6.
Mongameli Arosi, a community leader, told the COURIER that the executive mayor of Johannesburg, Clr Herman Mashaba was supposed to come and address them however he didn’t pitch.
“We don’t know where to go or to turn to because no one is listening. We planned a peaceful march where the mayor was supposed to come and we woke up to this chaos,” he said.
Rene Parker commented on Facebook: “It’s with much sadness. The community from Jackson Informal Settlement, Eikenhof are hugely upset due to having to pull shacks down for the running of electricity. This took place in August last year. It’s now eight months later and nothing has happened. The ANC councillor has been approached on several occasions with numerous issues and nothing has been done. I know some residents are violent but we can’t paint all of them with the same brush. The majority are really lovely people who battle daily survive.”
The COURIER will follow up and keep on trying to make contact with the councillor and get comment from CoJ.
