Afrox honours Madiba by reaching out to the homeless

Afrox helps homeless with food and blankets within 67 minutes

AFROX hosted a food giveaway for the homeless at Salvation Army Church, Braamfontein, on July 18.

About 300 homeless received food and blankets. Before then, people were taught about social skills. Health screenings were conducted. Mobile clinics were also available for people to test for HIV and other illnesses.

Most of the homeless sleep under the Mandela Bridge. They scavenge for food in bins every day. They are not used to fresh, home-cooked meals as were provided by Afrox on the day.

The homeless sang songs of praise in appreciation of the food provided to them by Afrox. Some said it was not every day that people think about them. They added that Afrox and Salvation Army were doing good work in the community.

Pastor Darren Huke from Salvation Army said: “Afrox contacted us and asked to do something on Mandela Day. Because we are a church that helps out mostly with the homeless, they then linked up with us. What I loved about the event is that homeless people were given an opportunity to know their health status via the mobile clinics.”
