Begging in the streets helps family to survive
Single parent begs to survive, and for her children.
THE Mugudi family is one of the disadvantaged families in Steeldale who have been surviving on motorists’ kind hand-outs since 2014.
Irene Mugudi, a mother of three, begs for food and money on the street corners of Ormonde and Steeldale with her children. The family takes home R70 a day, and all of that money is used on food and clothes for her children.
Irene is a single parent and told the COURIER that all the money goes towards her children. However, because of lack of money, the children aren’t going to school, although two of them are of school going age.
“When it’s raining days it’s hard for us to stand at the street corners and beg for money that sometimes leads to us going to sleep without any food. The community feeding schemes, from which we sometimes receive food, helps a lot as the children would then take the day off from begging in streets,” Irene said.
“I want to see myself working and earning money. Even if I can be a domestic worker it will be fine. At least then I can provide for my children. Being a single parent is hard because I have to try by all means to see it through and make sure my children eat at the end of the day. What pains me is that I can’t put them through school, and if they are always with me on the streets, their futures are doomed,” said Irene.
If any wants to help Irene Mugudi you can find her at Crownwood Street corner Northern Parkway every Thursday and Friday.
