WATCH: Fire sweeps through 16 shacks in Booysens
It is believed that the shacks were set alight by a resident on Monday, September 24.
SIXTEEN families in Booysens informal settlement were left devastated after a fire raged through their shacks, burning their belongings.
It is believed that the shacks were set alight by a resident on Monday, September 24.
According to residents, the alleged culprit was not on good terms with one of the residents in the settlement. Around 2am on Monday, the culprit was seen by several witnesses pouring what is believed to be petrol on the victim’s shack and setting it alight.
Residents couldn’t stop the fire as it quickly spread to other shacks, but they were able to rescue people who were inside the shacks. No one was reported dead or injured.
One of the residents, Vusi Mvubu, said: “It was like we are in the movies. The fire was out of control, but we tried to defuse it by pouring sand and water over it. But I am glad there was no loss of life or any fatal injuries.”
It’s believed the accused is still roaming around the settlement.
No one has reported the matter to the police. Johannesburg Central SAPS confirmed to the COURIER that no case was reported to them.
Ward 124 councillor Mongameli Myameni couldn’t be reached for comment.
