Residents of Delmas still homeless after fire destroys their homes

Jasgray residents yet to return to their homes.

RESIDENTS of Delmas, unit 71 Jasgray Court in South Hills are still homeless after their homes were destroyed by a fire on September 6.

The blaze reduced their belongings to ashes and the affected families were provided with temporary accommodation at Recreation Centre. The families were supplied with blankets, food and other necessities.

But the initial support took a slight turn as the families find it hard to get food and support which was given to them at first.

When MMC for Housing Meshack van Wyk visited the families on September 18, he said these courts will be renovated within a period of three months or less, referring to Jasgrau and Northam Court which was also damaged in a fire on September 17.

The courts are still not repaired. Jasgray was cleaned by community members and South Hills SANCO members but it’s still not habitable. While residents are still sleeping at the Centre they have no food and identity documents to start looking for jobs.

Poppie Lourens, who currently resides at the Centre said, “We are still homeless, why are we neglected? We are struggling here we have no food but lots of mouths to feed. The MMC and ward councillor are quiet. We are alone here and even the NGOs and individuals who were providing us with food have lost interest.”

Ward 57 councillor Faeeza Chame couldn’t be reached for comment as she is on leave.
