Booysens child (8) not allowed at school because of brain damage
Unemployed, Colisiwe supports her son with her social grant money. But young Andile receives no grant because he has no birth certificate.
COLISIWE Mangciphu (38) of Booysens informal settlement is in dire need of help. Her son, Andile (8), suffers from brain damage. Her mom says her child has been taken to different clinics with no relief and she is crying out desperately for immediate help.
Unemployed, Colisiwe supports her son with her social grant money. But young Andile receives no grant because he has no birth certificate.
She says she lost her son’s birth certificate in a taxi and has tried to apply for a replacement from home affairs but has hit financial hurdles. No one is willing to help provide her with taxi fare and money to replace the lost document.
To compound her difficulties, Colisiwe told COURIER even schools will not enrol her son just because he suffers from brain damage. She needs to place him in a school for children with special needs, but she has no means to do that.
“My son’s situation is frustrating me a lot because I can’t even go out and look for any job as I have to take care of him. “People make fun of him and mock him. All that I want is my son to get well and go to school,” says Colisiwe.
“It pains me as a mother to see my son suffering. This is unimaginable pain that I am going through. But, I have to stay strong for my son’s sake.”
Community leader Arthur Khumalo says: “The child needs help because when other children are at school he roams around the settlement which is not an ideal thing.”
The COURIER is waiting on the Department of Education to establish how they can possibly help to place Andile in an appropriate school.
