Glen Hurst Court’s tenants blame landlord for disconnection

Residents concerned that the flat will collapse on them one day.

RESIDENTS of Glen Hurst Court in Rosettenville are hot under their collars with rage after experiencing a blackout for two weeks.

A resident who wished to remain anonymous said the court is a mess and residents are demanding better services as they pay rates.

The court is believed to be owing Eskom R2 769 579. 66. The document issued to the residents notified them that electricity supply had been terminated because the court was in arrears, and had not entered into an agreement with the City of Joburg as to how they planned to settle the arrears.

The document was seen by COURIER.

“We have meat and other necessities in our freezers and fridges that are going off. If we cannot have the electricity problem fixed we will have a problem. Living in a squatter camp is much better than being in this court. Most of the things here are in ruins,” said resident.

More problems

Other problems that the residents have to deal with include cracked walls, rats infestation, faulty wiring and unattended garbage.

General manager of Zelri Properties Riaan van Biljon – the owners of the Glen Hurst Court – told the COURIER they were unaware of faulty wiring connections and would need to obtain more clarity to address the problem.

Responding to the disconnection, van Biljon said: “This was a mere error by the City of Johannesburg (CoJ). We have already paid the account. Further to this, I saw the disconnection notice that was delivered to the building when they disconnected power which clearly relates not to us but to an unknown landlord. The address is wrong and the account number is different from that of our account number. Subsequent to the disconnection, we immediately contacted CoJ and requested clarity.”

Va Biljon said: “We saw from the disconnection notice that CoJ incorrectly linked our electricity meter number to that of the said property.

“Because the meter was incorrectly linked, they did not check the address and merely disconnected the linked meter which ended up being the incorrect meter. We managed to log a query with CoJ and they reconnected the power the same day, a few hours after incorrectly disconnecting. We are now resolving the incorrect link with them to avoid this from happening again. Thus, as much as we can confirm electricity was disconnected, it was done incorrectly and should never have happened. This was out of our control.”
