Naturena residents troubled by nyaope boys who ‘steal manhole covers’

Residents tired of nyaope boys stealing spree

THE residents of Bowles Street in Naturena are at their wits’end, complaining of “the nyaope boys” who continually steal manhole covers.

Residents say this has been ongoing for several months “and we are now fed up and determined to put an end to it”. According to some residents, the alleged perpetrators steal the covers at night.

One of the residents, Thandanani Mkhize, told the COURIER residents now use bricks as a replacement for manhole covers.

Residents are closing the sewage drains with bricks to avoid accidents.

“If we keep them open not only children may get hurt but adults walking at night might fall into these uncovered manholes. This is really frustrating; we don’t need such things in this day and age,” Mkhize stated.

Residents claim that it’s not only manhole covers that get stolen, but residents have their items of values being stolen from their properties.

“It’s frustrating to see such things happening in our area. We need a solution to put a stop to this. Our councillor should help to address this problem,” added Mkhize.

Residents from neighbouring streets also experience the same problem. They said all they want is to see manholes closed with proper covers.

“The police should deal with these nyaope boys who steal from us. We can’t even buy valuable things to decorate our house because we are scared they may be stolen,” Mkhize concluded.

Mondeor SAPS communications officer Capt Nokulunga Dube advised the residents to report all acts of crime to the police or by calling 10111.

When approached by the COURIER for comment, the councillor for Ward 119, Clr Oupa Ngwenya, was not available.
