Hospital urges people to break the silence of mental illness.

SOUTH Rand Hospital hosted a mental health symposium to educate nurses and other practitioners about the issue on July 17.

The day started with a candle lighting and reading of mental health pledge.

The purpose of the event was to inform leaders in both personal and professional lives to work together in promoting mental health rights and break the stigma and silence surrounding mental health.

One of the speakers, Zoleka Limakwe, a mental health trainer, said depression is something people should be cautious of because it might become fatal.

“When a person is bothered with something he/she should go to his/her local clinic for assistance because people live with all sorts of burdens, which may lead to depression.

“If your mood is anxiety and apathy, you must try and do something about it before it leads to behavioural activities such as agitation and restlessness,” said Limakwe.

Different speakers spoke on the day but the most important aspect addressed was mental health.

Prof Bernard Janse van Rensburg, a mental health strategist, emphasised to attendees that people who are mentally ill should be taken to rehabilitation centres for them to be assessed.

Speaking to attendees, Janse van Rensburg said there is a plan which is set up to deal with mental health issues and people who are mentally ill. The action plan has commenced and will run until 2023. This will help hospitals deal with mentally ill persons and accommodate them.
