Christmas lunch fund-raiser a success

Over 100 families, mostly of Portuguese origin, are currently being assisted by the DFF.

THE annual De Freitas Foundation (DFF) Christmas lunch fund-raiser, held on November 3, proved to be an overwhelming success.

The hall of the Nucleo de Arte e Cultura in Regents Park was filled to capacity.

Invited guests included councillor Vasco da Gama, speaker of the City of Johannesburg and Dr Joana Carvalho, the wife of the Ambassador of Portugal in Pretoria.

Both guests pledged their support for the work that the DFF does.

DFF board member Jeanette de Freitas explained that it took a number of months to prepare for this event.

“This fund-raiser is our main fund-raising activity so that we can undertake the work that the foundation does,” explained Jeanette de Freitas.

She said that it is thanks to the very generous donors and sponsors that provide food and auction items for the event that ensures that funds are raised for the projects the foundation undertakes.

In his address to everyone present at the fund-raiser, DFF board member Manny de Freitas explained that presently the DFF is focusing on three main projects: advocacy for alternative cancer solutions, the promotion of Portuguese and Portuguese culture and supporting under-privileged and poor communities.

Portuguese lessons have been provided for a year to children and adults alike. Over 100 families, mostly of Portuguese origin, are currently being assisted by the DFF.

“Our work is growing tremendously. As a result we now aim to purchase a vehicle for the purposes of the work of the DFF,” explained de Freitas.
