Rescued farm animals need a helping hand at Johannesburg SPCA

The JSPCA is caring for 76 rescued farm animals and appealing for donations to help cover their food, hay and veterinary needs.

The Johannesburg SPCA (JSPCA) farmyard now houses 76 animals after a joint operation by its inspectorate team and the City of Johannesburg’s law enforcement task team.

The operation removed 64 sheep, six goats, four bulls and two cows to safety.

By late afternoon, all the animals had arrived at the JSPCA farmyard, where staff provided shelter, fresh water, and food.

Rescue challenges

The operation faced challenges.

Some of the bulls and cows had never been handled before, making it difficult to get close enough to move them safely.

The teams needed patience, skill and courage to manage the animals and load them for transport.

The JSPCA thanked its inspectors and law enforcement officers for their hard work and co-operation throughout the operation.

Care and resources

All 76 animals are now receiving temporary care at the JSPCA farmyard, where they will remain for as long as necessary.

The organisation has also made it clear that the animals will not be available for adoption.

Operations of this nature are an important part of the JSPCA’s work to protect animals and respond when intervention is needed.

However, caring for so many farm animals puts additional pressure on the organisation’s limited resources.

The animals need regular feeding, plenty of hay, and ongoing veterinary care to ensure their health and well-being.

Meeting these needs requires both time and financial support.

The JSPCA is appealing to the public for donations to help it continue its work.

Every contribution, no matter how small, helps provide food and care for animals in need and supports inspectors who respond to animal welfare concerns.

Members of the public who would like to assist can donate via an electronic funds transfer using the following banking details:

Account name: JHB SPCA Bank: First National Bank Branch: Southdale Account number: 62362508396
