Snake Road to remain closed for months
Geotechnical inspection drilling down to the bedrock of the sinkhole is currently underway.
Snake Road in Benoni will remain closed for the forseeable future.
Following a site inspection by Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure Jacob Mamabolo and a team of geotechnical experts on Tuesday, it is anticipated that the road will remain closed until March next year at least.
The sinkhole has doubled in depth and width since it was first identified on November 2, according to Xolani Mngomezulu, an engineer from Aseda Consulting Engineers.
According to the geotechnical team that was onsite during the briefing, a final report will be delivered on December 12 which will indicate what needs to be done and the expected time of completion.
Geotechnical inspection drilling down to the bedrock of the sinkhole is currently underway.
The drilling is performed to obtain data on the physical characteristics of the soil/rock before design earthworks and proposed structures can be done to repair the distressed structure.
