Shawn van Eeden family asks for witnesses to come forward

A case of attempted murder was opened at Booysens Police Station at that time.

The family of the late Shawn van Eeden is pleading with the community of Turffontein to come forward with the information of what really happened outside a pub on October 23.

They said apparently Shawn was beaten with a baseball bat and ran over with a car. He succumbed to his injuries after nine days at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital on November 1.

A case of attempted murder was opened at Booysens Police Station at that time.

His sister, Desiré Opperman, said on the day Shawn left the house for the pub just after 9.30pm.

“His son stole a phone in the house and ran out. My brother went there to look for his son, he didn’t even have a shirt or shoes on. “We don’t know what really happened; however, we were told when he pulled over at the pub his car was blocked. Someone hit the car with a baseball bat.

“Apparently, when he alighted from the car with his hand up, showing he was not fighting, he was hit with a baseball bat and fell. They started kicking him and that’s when he was deliberately ran over by a car. “We want to ask the community and public if there was anyone there who may have taken a video or any witnesses to come forward,” explained Opperman.

His wife, Liz Craucamp, said her husband was a well-known person in the South, he didn’t deserve to die like this.

“We are pleading with the community to please come forward with the information of what really happened on that night. Please share the information with the police so he can get justice,” she said.

The family would like to thank Shawn for being part of their lives in good and bad times. They said they love him and he will be missed. They also want to thank the nurses and the doctors of ward 366 at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital for their help while Shawn was there.

Booysens police communications officer Capt Lorraine van Emmerik said, “I can confirm the case has been changed to murder and is been investigated.”

Craucamp can be contacted on 071 276 3594.

There will be memorial service for Shawn on November 14 and the service will be at 12noon, Ekkaleo Family Church in Robertsham. And then after there will be snacks at 10 Ring Road, Crown Gardens.
