Ward 57 councillor Faeeza Chame confirmed to the COURIER her ward will continue to fight for service delivery in the community.
She said buildings are being vandalised, hijacked and neglected. Potholes are not fixed, illegal dumping has become a norm everywhere and drug lords are taking over the area.
“Our people are not feeling safe anymore. La Rochelle, South Hills, Moffat View and Regents Park are just some of the areas in the ward deteriorating at a rapid pace. Council flats are left to rot due to lack of maintenance and poor upkeep, the infrastructure is falling apart.
“The elderly at the old age facilities are being neglected. Units are being left unoccupied and this is an invitation for desperate people to invade and become illegal occupants.
“Grass-cutting in the South has become something we only see once a year if we’re lucky. Residents have to endure the thought of having to deal with thieves hiding in the long grass or the elderly tripping over their brittle feet. This is an utter shame.
“The South has become lawless and free for all. No one wants to take responsibility for lack of service delivery. Power outages and street lights not working most of the time are an open invitation to thieves.
“When I seek answers from the officials, the normal excuse is budget, and not forgetting the new scapegoat: Covid-19. Ward 57 is screaming for service delivery,” said Chame.
