Investigations into cause of fire at Joburg Fresh Produce Market underway

EMS arrived on site and extinguished the fire timeously.

The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) is investigating the cause of a fire at the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market on March 19, where a section of the fruit hall caught fire at an electrical substation on the high-voltage side.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a service provider, who specialises in electrical engineering services, was on site and working on the electrical reticulation in halls five and six when the incident happened at about 21:07.

Security personnel on duty immediately reported the incident to EMS and Joburg Market maintenance department. EMS arrived on-site and extinguished the fire timeously.

The affected area was electrically isolated and will be cordoned off to ensure continuity of power to non-affected areas and that the facility remains safe. City Power, EMS and the City of Johannesburg insurer were on site to determine the extent of the damage and will provide the reports in due course.

The MMC of Economic Development at the City, Nkuli Mbundu, and Joburg Market board of directors were on site on Saturday night and Sunday morning to provide guidance and oversight on the recovery process underway.

The Joburg Market has ensured minimum disruptions to business operations, which are continuing as normal.
