The St Martin’s Climate Club staged a tree-planting ceremony recently.
Ten spekboom trees, also known as portulacaria afra, were planted on campus.
This tree is known as the wonder plant of South Africa. A spekboom tree is effective at removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. According to experts, a spekboom thicket is 10 times more effective at carbon fixing than any tropical forest.
This tree also reduces air pollution and will improve the quality of air in the area in which it is planted. In this case, it will impact the playing fields at St Martin’s.
The spekboom is water-wise and resilient. It is known to last for approximately 200 years and blooms rosy-pink flowers.
