WATCH: Power outage in Mondeor after Eldos substation gutted by fire

City Power team which is currently on-site is unfortunately unable to enter the substation due to safety concerns.

A fire gutted the Eldorado Park substation in the early hours of Good Friday, leaving large parts of Joburg south without electricity.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said at about 5:00 am the Eldorado Park substation caught fire causing almost the entire Eldorado Park and surrounding areas to be without electricity. 

Firefighters were dispatched, and the fire was extinguished around 07:30 and 8:00.

“The Johannesbug Emergency Management Services (JEMS) started putting out the fire and have now succeded in extiguishing it,” he said. 

The investigators and technicians have been dispatched to the scene. 

“City Power team which is currently on-site is unfortunately unable to enter the substation due to safety concerns. At the present moment the areas is still full of smoke and has not as yet  been declared safe to access.”

Mondeor, Eldorado Park, Naturena, Lenasia and surrounding areas are affected.

“City Power is aware of the inconvinienced this fire has caused to affected customers and will do everything possible to repair the station and to restore the power as soon as is humanly possible,” added Mangena.
