Walking Tall With Pride helps residents in the South

If you are interested in helping Walking Tall With Pride NPC you can contact Pauline Houniet on 083 415 3058 for more information.

Walking Tall With Pride is an NPC based in the South of Joburg and it was started by Jeff Ellis and his wife Marie as a soup kitchen to help with the poverty in the South.

Jeff a passionate boxer from the South and started the project after seeing that many of the amateur boxers that didn’t manage to make it to the professional arena struggles to put food on the table. They first started the soup kitchen at the Southern Suburbs Sport and Recreational Centre based in Rosettenville to look after the boxers.

Just before lockdown, a total of 40 000 meals were served by the soup kitchen.

Anton Gilmore, who also serves as a director of the organisation, has a boxing gym at the centre and also helps with the serving of food that happens every Wednesday afternoon.

Eric Houniet and his wife Pauline joined the organisation in July 2019 after doing their 67 minutes on Mandela Day at the soup kitchen.

“We selected Walk Tall With Pride as my Freemasons lodge (Prins Frederik) donates to the organisation monthly,” said Eric.

Pauline was made a director at the organisation just after the start of the Covid-19 lockdown.

It was during this time that Pauline received multiple enquiries and requests from residents for food parcels.

“The first time we went shopping for groceries for food parcels it took us three hours to get everything as we didn’t know what to get. If we had to do it now again it will take us about 45 minutes. We delivered food parcels to residents of the south until February this year when we moved to Ridge Park Sports Club,” said Paulina.

During the lockdown, the organisation gave out weekly food parcels but now it hands out food once or twice a month.

Since moving to the Ridge Park Sports Club, the organisation took a while to get going again as most of the people were used to receiving the parcels at their houses but word of mouth, as well as getting a chef involved helped to attract people.

In the future, the organisation is looking to expand to the local schools to start with feeding schemes at the schools.
