EMPD records scores of car crashes in Alberton

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department has recorded scores of car accidents in Alberton.

Between January and December 2021, the EMPD recorded about 331 crashes and between January and July 2022, there were about 174 crashes in Alberton.

They have since confirmed that traffic congestion has picked up, especially after Covid-19 restrictions were lifted.

EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa confirmed that load-shedding puts a strain on them during these varying stages.

“We are not only performing point duties, but deal with crashes or accidents as well. In terms of resources, we have challenges during the transportation of officers. Sometimes we do become overwhelmed, especially with captivation where out of order intersections are more than officers on the ground,” she said.

The EMPD tries to minimise traffic congestion by deploying officers strategically on busy main intersections.

“We first ensure that there is a free flow of traffic, pending on availability of our resources. We also prioritise our primary functions like a crash or criminal activities taking place. We are also visible on suggested hot spots,” said Thepa.

She also requested the community to contact their service call centre on 086 054 3000 as soon as they experience any load-shedding and a heavy flow of traffic – especially at busy main intersections.
