South Hills flats are not fixed after fire
Over two months later the families are still waiting for the flats to be fixed.
The families whose flats were destroyed by fire on June 29 in Usutu Court, South Hills, are still waiting for their flats to be fixed.
Six bedrooms and two bathrooms were damaged by the fire which started in a garage nearby.
Ward 57 councillor Faeeza Chame said there seems to be no urgency from the human settlements department to restore dignity to these residents.
“They live in fear because criminals can get into their properties. They live in fear of when the first spring rain will start. The human settlements department is playing the blaming game. Everyone is waiting for the insurance, yet no one does follow-ups. Two months to live like this is not easy.
“Since the fire, I have been begging and pleading with them to assist the residents in restoring their units. I will not stop bugging the officials until the residents’ units are in a liveable condition again.
“At the same time, I would like to urge our residents to take out private insurance for unforeseen circumstances. I find that units burn and this is the result when we have to wait for the city to do repairs or replace valuable furniture or items,” she said.
Southern Courier is still waiting for the human settlements department in this matter.
