Silwerkroon couple treasures their golden anniversary

Ria and Leon Schutte are cherishing the 50th anniversary of their special love in marriage.

Love, communication and their shared love for God have kept Ria (67) and Leon (70) Schutte together for a beautiful and memorable 50 years.

September 23 marks their golden jubilee of marriage and the day they both vowed to be each other’s happiness and success and to love one another without holding back.

Having known each other for at least 52 years and married for 50 years, they boast the success of their marriage to God and are still reaching for more years of life together.

Ria was only 17 when Leon took her hand in marriage and the pair has since stood by each other – in good and bad times and are still growing strong. They have two children and have a shared love for Mother Nature.

Leon said he stole his wife’s heart out of a cart and they have since grown from strength to strength.

“We both were born in Germiston. I was in the military for many years and travelling all over the country. We then left South Africa and relocated to Namibia, but later came back to the country. For all these years, we have always believed in not sleeping without saying our goodbyes and reading the Bible.

In an exclusive interview, he said marriage is a Godly union, not a manly union.

Their motto is ‘don’t go to bed angry with your spouse. Both are firm believers that if you put each other first, no one will come between your love.

They spend their days walking in the garden, holding hands, and appreciating their love for flowers and birds.

“We have since lived up to the vows we made before the community and God, to be with each other through thick and thin. We wouldn’t have made it if God wasn’t the centre of this marriage. We advise couples to forever respect each other and they should be inseparable,” explained Ria.
