Huttons at the helm of 60 years of marital bliss

Eden Park couple celebrates 60 years of unconditional love.

Eden Park is home to a warm couple, Pat and Ellen Hutton.

The couple, both residents from the very cornerstone that started Eden Park, form part of its original migrants from the Germiston district. They met and married in Germiston and made Eden Park their home.

They have been living there ever since and will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on December 1.

Their love story

Pat, a skilled craftsman, started his career in the clothing factories of Germiston before joining Bitcon Industries in the East Rand. He trained as a welder, and this was his area of specialisation before he became a sheet metal worker. He started working at Alberton Steel Windows, where he honed and crafted his skills flawlessly as an aluminium window and door frame expert.

Ellen Hutton, neè Christoffels, hailed from Komani (previously known as Queenstown, Eastern Cape) and came to Johannesburg with a vision to make a success of her life. She joined her sisters working in the factories in Germiston. It is here where she met the man of her heart and embarked on a journey of matrimony in 1962.

Pat and Ellen moved to Eden Park in 1975. To Pat and Ellen raising their children in a principled Christian environment was paramount, as reflected in both their dedication to the establishment of St Paul’s Parish.

They served as prominent church elders of the Catholic church and have no signs of retiring. Pat, as a leader in the community, not only served in church but even showed leadership as a chairperson of the SGB of the local school.

Pat is characterised as a fiery, bold character, akin to the sun, providing warmth and enlightenment where he engages. Ellen is described as a soft power, strong and even though she may not be as vocal, she is equally as influential. They raised five kindhearted and successful individuals who also find meaning in uplifting and being leaders in their own right.

Out of their 60 years of what can be described as a journey of a multitude of lessons, they find what gives them the deepest satisfaction is the welfare of their children.

Pat and Ellen have many pearls in their crown, of pride are five adult children and spouses, 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Message from the family

The family would like to take a moment to celebrate with the married couple, wishing them continued health and enduring happiness on their 60th wedding anniversary on December 1.
