City urges pensioners to re-apply for property rates rebates

Pensioners stand to score big on the recently approved property rates, which saw the City approving only 2% increase in the property rates. The implementation of the new tariffs will be July 1.

City of Johannesburg has given pensioners, who own residential properties, until September 30 to apply or re-apply for pensioner rebates benefits.

Current benefits will lapse on June 30. Pensioners stand to gain financially on the recently approved property rates, which saw the city approving only 2% increase in the property rates. The implementation of the new tariffs will be on July 1.

City’s Group Finance Department’s director of customer communications Kgamanyane Maphologela, said all applications for the rebates received by September 30 will be backdated to July 1.

The city has also approved property rebates for different categories of pensioners, which will provide relief for hard-pressed pensioners. Below are the categories of rebates for pensioners:

Pensioners between the ages of 60 – 69

• Pensioners whose gross monthly household income is lower than R11 904 and the property value is up to R1.5m (inclusive of the residential threshold value).

• Qualifies for 100% rates rebate up to the market value of R1.5m (inclusive of the residential threshold value). Rates will be levied on the balance of the market value of more than R1.5m.

• Pensioners whose gross monthly household income is more than R11 904.01 but equal to or less than R20 404, and the property value up to R1.5m (inclusive of the residential threshold value) for pensioners from the age of 60.

• Qualifies for 100% rates rebate up to the market value of R1.5m (inclusive of the residential threshold value). Rates will be levied on the balance of the market value of more than R1.5m.

Pensioners 70 years and above

• Income levels are not considered.

• Qualifies for 100% rates rebate up to the market value of R2m (inclusive of the residential threshold value). Rates will be levied on the balance of the market value of more than R2m.

Documents needed to submit the application process

• ID copy (certified)

• Three-month bank statements

• Proof of income OR

• SASSA card copy (certified back and front)
