Donate to replenish critically low bloodstock
Don’t let South Africa run out of safe blood.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) faces a bloodstock shortage. The weather conditions and a higher-than-usual demand for blood saw blood stocks plummet.
The SANBS needs to collect 3 500 units of blood daily and urgently appeals to potential and existing blood donors who are due to donate to visit a SANBS donation site and donate their unit of blood.
“With little blood available on hand, this will severely impact the patients who rely on life-saving blood transfusions,” said Thandi Mosupye, the SANBS senior manager: marketing, communication and brand.
“Patients’ lives are at risk when our blood stocks dip below three days. The lives of haemorrhaging mothers, newborns, accident victims, and thousands of other patients in need of a blood transfusion,” Mosupye added.
Each donation gives patients a second chance with their loved ones.
To become a blood donor, you must:
• be aged between 16 and 75;
• weigh 50kg or more;
• be healthy;
• lead a healthy lifestyle;
• deem your blood safe for transfusion;
• commit to donating blood regularly.
