Phalane’s brand advocates self-confidence

Florentia resident Mpho Phalane promised his gym-wear brand would be the next big thing in South Africa, if not Africa.

While growing up, Mpho Phalane was teased a lot about his weight. However, the 20-year-old rose above the teasing by starting a gym-wear brand to empower locals.

The University of Johannesburg third-year student and health fanatic started a gym-wear brand, Hunkwear, last July.

His brand strongly resembles qualities he once lacked – bravery, charisma and confidence.

“I spent most of my teenage life overweight and got teased a lot. In Grade Eight, a girl made fun of me, and that day, everything changed. At a later stage, I managed to get over it by consistently hitting the gym and having great discipline,” he said.

“If you love going to the gym and being active, Hunkwear is definitely for you. We are building a brand that aims to make a statement so that when the next person sees you, they quickly notice you see yourself as a ‘Hunk’. I sometimes tell people it can turn you from feeling like Clark Kent into feeling like you’re Superman,” Phalane said.

The brand plans to host its annual fitness event, ‘There is a hunk in your city’.

He invited all fitness enthusiasts to come in their numbers.

“This is also us requesting any possible partnerships to come along and help us host this event. It’s the first of many, and you do not want to miss it. We will try to have stalls, refreshments and adequate gym equipment on the day for our fitness activities,” he explained.

He also thanked his mother, friends and clients for their support during his journey. Any potential sponsors can contact Phalane on 066 085 5345.
