40 years for kidnapping, extortion and assault

Two suspects were handed 40 years’ imprisonment for kidnapping, extortion and assault.

On August 15, 2018, the complainant was inside a shop in Turffontein with a friend when they heard a noise outside. He went to check and the people who were standing outside told him that four unknown males with their faces covered took a colleague by force and they put him inside a red Toyota Yaris.

The complainant watched as the car sped away.

The docket was handed to Sergeant Zondi Maimela from Booysens SAPS to investigate. Four suspects were arrested and the docket was placed at the court. The docket was handed back to the investigation officer to obtain all information and outstanding reports.

During the years that the investigation took place, two of the suspects died in prison. The remaining two suspects appeared in court and were found guilty as follows:

• Count 5: kidnapping (25 years)

• Count 6: extortion (15 years)

• Count 7: assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (five years)
