Case against 7 SAPS officers postponed over uncertified evidence

The Booysens Magistrate’s Court postponed the extortion and kidnapping case for chain-of-evidence documents to be certified.

Members of the JMPD Tactical Reaction Unit (TRU) arrested seven SAPS officers on October 22, 2025, who allegedly extorted and kidnapped an illegal miner found with gold-refining materials and gold-bearing soil.

The court heard that the officers reportedly demanded R5 000 from the miner, a figure they later allegedly increased to R30 000.

They allegedly took the victim to a loan facility to secure the payment, before the TRU intervened and made the arrests.

The seven accused appeared in the Booysens Magistrate’s Court again on October 7.

Magistrate Vele requested all chain-of-evidence documentation from the defence and the state, as well as a fully completed charge sheet for all seven accused.

The documents submitted as chain evidence by both the defence and the state are required to be certified before being submitted as evidence.

Many of the documents were not certified and some were copies of the originals.

Magistrate Vele then postponed the case to October 28 for the evidence documentation to be certified.
