WATCH: Stolen electric cables found at Liefde en Vrede informal settlement

Search and recovery operation for illegal electrical connections ends with scrap yard lights being cut off.

The Infrastructure protection units of JMPD and the SAPS along with municipal entities, Joburg Water, and City Power accompanied by security personnel of Fox Security, CPS Security and Calvin Security, carried out an illegal connections operation on November 7.

The operation was headed by Ward 125 Clr Matsobane Sekhu and was aimed at recovering stolen government property such as traffic lights and the electricity cables that run through them.

The informal settlement was searched in the open area opposite Mall of the South on Swartkoppies Road in Liefde en Vrede.

The area has a taxi rank in front of it and deep into the grassland behind it, is an informal settlement on private property.

Vumacam camera systems outside the mall recorded footage of individuals destroying robots, dismantling them and dragging them into this settlement.

A search was carried out and in one shack tools such as a hacksaw, a pick and spanners were confiscated and these are tools associated with traffic light cable theft.

Sekhu spoke about the importance of this search and recovery operation.

“Many key role players have come together to carry out an operation to recover government property and catch those responsible for the theft. This is a key issue that we are tackling as infrastructure is being damaged and stolen by criminals for far too long. It has caused problems in terms of accidents and has hindered infrastructure development,” said Sekhu.

A search of a scrap yard in Kibler Park was also carried out and stolen electricity cables were recovered there as well.

The scrap yard was also found to have an illegal electricity connection, which City Power officials cut off.
