Local NPC honours serving the community with 70 000 meals over six years

Thanks to the good-natured people of the boxing world and southern community, the feeding scheme run by Anton Gilmore, Paulina Houniet, and Marie Ellis has been feeding meals to the impoverished.

Johannesburg South’s Walking Tall With Pride celebrated on May 24 for serving 70 000 meals over the course of six years of assisting families in need even during difficult times.

Thanks to the good-natured people of the boxing world and southern community, the feeding scheme run by Anton Gilmore, Paulina Houniet, and Marie Ellis has been feeding meals to the impoverished.

Just like every Wednesday, the community was served with delicious food.

Director of the organisation Anton Gilmore said the feeding scheme was previously located at the Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre, which is also where Anton’s gym is located.

Due to Covid-19 time constraints, it was relocated to Peter Muller’s Ridge Park Bowling Green.

“The scheme has fed people, arranged for children to attend school, and provided Hauwei Cellular with 200 bags of pap and 1 000 tins of beans, in addition to 300kg of biscuits recently donated by Mark Scott of NGL Logistics Africa.”

Eric Houniet, Chris Buckler, Paulina Houniet and Anton Gilmore.

Golden Gloves Boxing Promotions’ Rodney Berman and the Masons have also contributed to the project via Alan van der Vyver.

Grant Homan donated clothing and furniture from a deceased estate.

Without these donations, feeding would simply be a meal, but clothing and many other benefits result, with a few people taking odd jobs to feed their families.

“This initiative brings smiles and much appreciation from the destitute with compliments of the great meals they receive at the centre which serves a real portion of food that will sustain them for a day.

“If you would like to help the project in any way by donating food, nappies, leftover clothing, or nearly expired food items, this would help us sustain the people of the southern suburbs,” Gilmore said.

“On behalf of Walking Tall, we thank all the lovely people who brighten someone’s day.”
