Primary school learner hit by a car in Robertsham
The family of Brett Sergeant needs help to cover medical bills.

Brett Sergeant, a Robertsham Primary School learner, suffered severe injuries during a hit-and-run incident on June 8.
He was walking to school in the morning when a silver Polo hit him to the left of the zebra crossing as he crossed the road on the corner of Harry Street and Delamere Road.
According to Mark Lynch, who alerted the Southern Courier, the crossing was marked and had a pedestrian warning or signpost.
“The Polo did not slow down and hit the boy, severely injuring him. After calling the emergency services, Brett was taken to Garden City Clinic, where he underwent an emergency operation on his right leg, broken in several places.
“He was also diagnosed with cranial haemorrhages and placed in ICU for stabilisation.
“The school has undertaken to assist the family as far as possible but does not have the funds to pursue Brett’s ongoing medical care. His family does not have the means to pay the excessive medical bills this accident will incur and needs to raise funds and get external support to bring Brett’s life back into some order of balance. The family has appealed to Netcare, the public and well-wishers to assist where possible,” he said.
He also noted the Polo who hit Brett sped off without caring about the well-being of the boy on the road, severely damaged by his negligent driving.
“The only picture of the car so far obtained shows a Polo racing off displaying an ‘l’ in the back window. This event shocked witnesses.
“Ms van Lill, a departmental head and suitably qualified second-tier first aid responder, assisted Brett until the paramedics arrived to transport the badly injured child to the hospital.
“How sad to think that the driver of the Polo, whom we shall continue to look out for, had no conscience to stop and accept responsibility for the accident.
“This is a reprehensible example of who or what our society has become,” Lynch said.
He also said they went to see Brett on June 18. He is now recovering in a ward.
