WATCH: Toddler dies in Turffontein shack fire

Nearly 42 people have been left homeless after 23 homes were destroyed.

A 21-month-old girl died in a shack fire in Forest Street, Turffontein on July 23.

According to Akhona Sweli, who lives in a house on the property, it is alleged the mother of the child left a lit candle while the child was asleep and went to the shops.

“When she came back there were flames all over. Everyone tried to save the child. However, the fire was too strong and it spread to another three shacks nearby. Neighbours also tried with water buckets to quell the fire but it was in vain,” explained Sweli.

There were 23 shacks on the property which all burnt down, leaving 42 people destitute.

“SA Rangers were first on the scene and then fire engines came. However, it was too late as most of the shacks were already burnt. People lost everything in that inferno including their ID documents and children’s certificates,” she said.

Community leader Nqobani ‘Gatsheni’ Ndlovu said disaster management came to give the destitute people blankets and toiletries.

“We welcome any help from anyone. I am also in contact with Sassa and they promised to give food vouchers for groceries. However, I’m pleading with the community or whoever can, to assist with temporary shelter. These people need to rebuild their homes” he said.

Five children need help. Two girls and two boys aged one to two years, and a seven-year-old boy. There are also eight women who need assistance.

Anyone who can assist can donate items at 71 Park Road in Turffontein or contact Ndlovu on 074 824 3388.
