JSPCA to celebrate 121 years of compassion
Join the JSPCA in celebrating 121 years of compassion and hope for animals in need by donating R121 in honour of its birthday.
Johannesburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) will mark an extraordinary milestone – 121 years of dedicated service to the community and their beloved pets on October 28.
The journey, as described by Liana Marx, the PRO of JSPCA, has been one of resilience, compassion and unwavering commitment to animal welfare. Serving as the official pound, the JSPCA opens their doors to any stray, donated, or abandoned animal, never turning away a creature in need.
A legacy of compassion and financial struggles
Marx expressed that the Johannesburg SPCA stands as one of the largest and most influential animal welfare organisations in South Africa and was established in 1902.
“Over the years, we have confronted numerous challenges, from rehabilitating abused animals to dealing with difficult situations.
“The financial strain has at times forced us to make tough decisions, such as temporarily closing their hospital section. Yet, the spirit of the JSPCA endures, rising above adversity to continue our vital work.
“One of the biggest hurdles faced by the JSPCA is the constant struggle for funds. Rising living costs have placed a significant strain on both individuals and the organization itself. Families, facing financial constraints, have been heartbreakingly forced to surrender beloved pets. Witnessing the pain in the eyes of both children and pets during these moments is a sombre reminder of the challenges we face daily. Despite these hardships, we remain dedicated, waking up each day with the determination to make a difference,” said Marx.
Community support
Marx underscored that the backbone of the JSPCA’s success lies in the unwavering support of the community.
“Generous individuals and businesses have provided the financial means necessary to rescue, shelter, and nourish countless animals in need. Even in times of financial hardship, the community continues to rally behind the cause, demonstrating their deep commitment to animal welfare,” said Marx.
Marx added that to commemorate this historic occasion, the community is invited to stand alongside them in their mission.
“A donation of R121, in honour of 121 years, can play a crucial role in supporting our ongoing efforts. These funds will provide vital resources for the care and protection of distressed animals,” said Marx.
