WATCH: South Rand Road blocked with burning tyres

The protest caused severe traffic delays and motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

Motorists are advised to avoid the South Rand Road towards Rand Airport Road due to protest action this morning.

It is believed protesters have blocked off the road with rocks and burning tyres.

The illegal occupants of land nearby are believed to be disgruntled about the illegal dumping closing their walkway.

According to councillor Faeeza Chame, she has been in contact with the City of Johannesburg, JMPD and SAPS regarding the protest.

“Their grievance is that they complaining of the illegal dumping that is closing their walkway,” she said.

Faeeza said she also engaged with the City again to strategise on how to deal with this informal settlement.

“They will let me know when we going to address the illegal occupiers of the land. They will call the protest off now,” added Faeeza.
