Futura School hosts Autism Awareness Walk

The community came out to support the walk and fun day for a good cause and a good day out.

To commemorate Autism Awareness Month, Futura Special Needs School held an autism awareness walk and fun day.

Members of the community came out to support the school in raising awareness by participating in the 3km walk that kicked off at 08:00.

The purpose was to raise funds to develop the school’s autism unit and educate the public on autism and foster an environment where children and adults with autism are accepted and included.

The event included a variety of food and craft vendors, health screenings, blood donations and jumping castles with water slides which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

Principal of Futura School, Michelle Batchelor, said: “We are a special needs school and this year, we started catering for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) learners, making this our very first fundraiser to bring awareness about autism.

“The most important part of the day is to bring awareness to the public and for families to enjoy a day out with fun activities. We want people to understand that autistic people are different but not less.”
