Embrace Village Preschool gives children a second chance
At TLC Preschool, children who’ve faced hardship are learning to talk, trust, and thrive—thanks to the care of dedicated teachers and a community that believes every child matters.
One morning, at a preschool on the edge of the Walkerville community, teacher Ellen watched a small boy named Lethabo thread beads with deep concentration. It looked like any other preschool until she listened more closely.
“This is where we catch the gaps before they grow too wide,” a teacher told her. The teacher wasn’t talking about toys. She talked about child development, trauma, and giving vulnerable children a fair start.
At Embrace Village’s TLC Developmental Preschool, they find a place where children who’ve faced hardship are supported to catch up with their more secure peers. Additionally, language is nurtured, coordination strengthened, and emotions named and calmed.
Many arrive withdrawn or behind. With consistent care, they begin to flourish – talking, playing, and trusting again.
“She knows this is a safe place,” one teacher said about a little girl who now greets her with a smile. “And she’s starting to believe she matters,” added the teacher.
The first five years of life are critical. If gaps aren’t addressed early, they can widen fast. Director of Embrace Village, Pippa Jarvis shared: “This preschool lays down missing bricks on a daily basis and with intention. “It’s about dignity,” added Jarvis. “Every child deserves the chance to thrive, not just survive.”
You can help build that chance by donating pre-loved toys, books or clothing, contributing groceries, or sponsoring a child’s place. Every bit of support makes a lasting difference.
