Road reopens after passenger altercation causes major M1 crash in Booysens

A bus lost control after a passenger grabbed the steering wheel during an altercation and collided with six other vehicles near the Booysens Road off-ramp.

The M1 Highway in Booysens has been reopened to traffic after a serious crash involving a bus and six other vehicles caused significant disruptions earlier this morning.

The incident occurred near the Booysens Road off-ramp, where the bus, travelling south, reportedly lost control after a passenger allegedly grabbed the steering wheel during an altercation with the driver.

The bus veered off the M1 South, crossed the centre median, and crashed into multiple vehicles travelling north.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that several people sustained injuries. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported at this stage.

Emergency services and law enforcement officials responded swiftly, and the M1 North was temporarily closed at Booysens Road while the scene was cleared and investigations began.

Motorists were advised to use Crownwood Road or Xavier Street as alternative routes during the closure. Fihla later confirmed that the road has since been reopened to traffic and that the area is safe for travel.

The JMPD continues to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
