Huge turnout at South Hills Clinic for free health checks

Women are encouraged to take care of their health.

On August 12, South Hills Clinic marked Women’s Month by offering free health checks, including HPV screening, clinical breast examinations, and PSA screenings.

Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame said Women’s Month was an opportunity to focus on women’s health.

“In South Africa, one in 27 women is diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. It is the most common cancer among women,” she said.

Chame outlined five warning signs of breast cancer: new lumps or thickening in the breast or underarm, changes in breast size or shape, skin changes such as dimpling or redness, nipple changes like inversion or discharge, and persistent breast pain.

“It’s possible to have breast cancer for years before symptoms begin. With the help of the Pink Drive Team, South Hills Clinic and staff, we conducted mammograms, Pap smears, and HPV screening. The turnout was overwhelming. I’m glad to see women taking care of their health and encourage them to get tested throughout the year,” she said.
